Lego and Board Game Clubs
Students at Forest Hill are enjoying a variety of clubs offered during nutrition breaks, including the Lego club and the Board Game club. The clubs continue to grow in popularity. To meet the needs of the club members we are looking for donations! The Lego club is looking for Lego and base plates. The Board Game club is looking for decks of cards, and board games suitable for school age children.
Black History Month
In 1978, the Ontario Black History Society petitioned the city of Toronto to proclaim February as Black History Month. In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality to proclaim February as Black History Month. In 1995, Jean Augustine successfully passed a motion to proclaim February as Black History Month across Canada. We honour Black Canadians who have helped build the Canada we know today. Their passion, talent and vision has transformed and strengthened every facet of our society. They are heroes and trailblazers. They have inspired generations of Canadians. Black History Month also reminds us of the inequity and barriers many continue to face, from anti-Black racism and discrimination to a lack of opportunity and resources.
World Read Aloud Day, February 1st
For 13 years, World Read Aloud Day has called attention to the importance of sharing stories by challenging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read-aloud! The global effort is celebrated annually in over 173 countries and is all about bringing people together through the shared connection of reading aloud in all of our communities.
Early Literacy at Forest Hill
Educators have been engaging in professional learning around the recommendations in the Right to Read report. This includes a greater focus on phonemic and phonological skills. We also have tutors working with grade 1 and 2 students individually or in small groups to help them build these skills. One of the resources we are using is the UFLI program. UFLI Foundations is an explicit and systematic phonemic awareness and phonics program that is both research and evidence based.
PALS
The SMDHU was here this week to train staff and parent volunteers on our OPHEA team to support students. Playground Activity Leaders in Schools, “P.A.L.S.” was created by the Region of Peel Public Health Department in 2003. It is a peer-led playground leadership program that encourages all children to participate in activities regardless of their gender, size, or ability. P.A.L.S. key messages are to encourage: “There’s always room for one more!” “Physical activity is fun!” “Everyone is welcome!”
